Acne Scars: The Causes and Treatments

March 27, 2015 by Dr. Vitenas

What You Can Do About Acne Scars

The common wisdom for teenagers with acne is that the problem will go away as they mature. But while many will experience the most severe outbreaks of acne during puberty and their teenage years, it is also happens to those later in life.

And even if the frequency and force of acne does go away over time, the scars can leave an uneven appearance. Those with acne scarring are often embarrassed by their appearance. This can reduce confidence and self-esteem.

What Are the Various Acne Types

Among the different types of acne, some cause scarring more than others. The more benign forms include common blackheads and whiteheads; they usually go away on their own and don’t leave scarring.

But acne can worsen and cause inflammatory acne, which is the most harmful type. The varying degrees of inflammatory acne can cause nodules and acne cysts that can lead to significant skin damage. This is due to the pressure that builds as the inflammation spreads under the skin. The body tries to fight back, in turn possibly causing acne scars.

Acne Scars Explained

Acne scars must be differentiated from macules or post-acne marks. They only change the pigmentation of the skin. Acne scars leave facial skin uneven, with raised or pitted scars as the body tries to respond to the inflammation of the acne.

This is because the body produces collagen as it attempts to repair the damage the acne inflammation is causing. But when the body creates too much collagen it can produce raised acne scars. When it doesn’t produce enough collagen, it results in pitted skin.

Why Some People Are More Prone to Scar From Acne

The most common reason people scar from acne is genetics. If others in your family have scars from acne, then you are probably prone.

Sometimes it is just due to not treating the acne properly or at all. Early treatment is likely to reduce the incidence and odds of acne scars.

A big part of treating acne is by practicing proper skincare hygiene. Too little or too much cleansing can aggravate the skin and cause acne or make it worse.

Finally always avoid picking at, and even touching, any outbreaks of acne. Although it’s commonly known that these behaviors introduce bacteria and injure the skin, many still do it. But to avoid acne scars, you must learn to reverse and avoid these habits.

How to Treat and Reduce Acne Scars

Acne scars can be difficult to treat, but there are some measures that can improve smoothness and reduce the uneven appearance of acne scars.

Laser treatments such as LimeLight IPL and Laser Genesis can help improve the appearance of acne scars. They work by vaporizing the upper layers of skin promoting skin cell growth and the production of collagen. Following the procedure the old skin is removed and the fresh, new layer is revealed. Treatments like dermabrasion and chemical peels also work in a similar manner, removing the older, top layers of skin, but may have more complications and a longer recovery time.

Skin care products that are medical-grade like SkinMedica Acne can also address the causes of acne and prevent scarring.
