Cosmetic treatments are always evolving — often for the better. A few hundred years ago, for example, it was de rigueur to cover the face with a makeup made from lead. People used to put drops of deadly nightshade (aka belladonna) into their eyes to dilate the pupils. Both are practices that we recognize as very unsafe today. Fortunately, we’ve developed much safer and more effective ways of enhancing our appearance.
Take body sculpting for unwanted fat. In the past, liposuction was just about the only effective solution–but not anymore. Modern options now include surgical and non-surgical techniques. Even these new methods are evolving. Coolsculpting, a popular non-surgical method that freezes fat away, is just one example of this. Since the fat reduction treatment was first FDA-approved in 2010, it’s seen a few tweaks and improvements.
Let’s take a look at what’s new with Coolsculpting these days.
Shorter Treatment Time
Initially, Coolsculpting’s claim to fame was that it could freeze away up to 25 percent of the fat in a given area in just an hour. During that hour, you were able to relax, read, watch TV or chat with your friends.
Now, with the Cool Advantage system, the treatment time is further reduced. You can now get similar results from a Coolsculpting treatment in just 35 minutes. The shorter treatment time has to do with a redesigned applicator. The new shape of the applicator means that there’s more contact with the area being treated, so the fat becomes chilled more quickly.
More Applicators Available
Another way that Coolsculpting has evolved over the years is that it now has more applicator shapes and sizes available, which makes it easier to treat certain areas. For example, the Cool Mini made it possible to receive Coolsculpting under the chin. In the past, the only way to get rid of unwanted chin fat was with liposuction or a series of injections. The Cool Mini applicator is perfectly sized and shaped, allowing it to fit in the chin and neck area and get rid of the dreaded double chin.
Treat Multiple Areas At Once
The tricky thing about Coolsculpting is that, unlike liposuction, some providers can only treat one area at a time. In the past, that meant that if you wanted to treat both sides of abdomen or both thighs, you often needed to schedule two treatment sessions or sit through two hours of Coolsculpting in a row.
Then, some providers began offering what came to be known as Dualsculpting. With Dualsculpting, you get to treat two areas at once. You can freeze the fat away from both love handles or both thighs at the same time, for example. Dualsculpting can help you save time and money. It also helps you enjoy more consistent results since you don’t have to wait and come back to treat the opposite side.
The number of Coolsculpting machines that your provider offers determines whether Dualsculpting is an option for you. For example, if a provider has just one machine, they aren’t able to treat two areas at once. Even if a provider has two machines available, they might be hesitant to use both on a single patient at once.
Increased Comfort
One of the biggest benefits of Coolsculpting over liposuction and other fat reduction options is that it’s relatively comfortable. The redesign of the applicator now means that the treatment is more comfortable than ever. One reason for that is the shorter treatment time. The less time your skin stays in the applicator’s vacuum, the less swelling and bruising you’ll end up with. The improved shape of the applicator also means that there is less vacuum suction on the skin, which also helps to reduce bruising.
